Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy 2012 revealed that girls are more capable to outperform boys in writing at all levels.

The major difference in attainment between the sexes was clearly recorded at secondary two (S2) level.

The survey was comprised of 10,000 pupils where the attainment levels were judged at primary (P4), primary (P7) and S2 levels.

After analysing writing skills, the report found that the pupil of P4 and S2 showed that they were progressing well, very well, or beyond the required level for their stage. Progress was highest in P7 at 72%.

The level S2 showed the biggest difference, where 70% of scripts belonged to the girls were well written or beyond the expectations. This percentage was further compared with 58% progress of the boys.

Official statistics further mentioned that pupils from the most deprived regions performed well in reading and writing as compared to those from least deprived regions.

Furthermore, Learning Minister Alasdair Allan pointed out that we are taking clear action against deprivation and improving literacy through the Literacy Action Plan, developed with input from the Literacy Commission and Early Years initiatives, such as PlayTalkRead, to help our youngest children.
