Lab reports are all about describing and analysing a laboratory experiment that discovers a scientific concept. If you are asked to write it in a legitimate manner, then first, it’s good to make an effective outline. By this, you can easily write it without difficulties. So, without any delay, let’s have a look how to outline your lab report:
• First of all make a title page including the name of experiment, date, your name and your members’ names.
• Now, state the purpose or problem of your experiment. Mention your intentions without repeating the instructions of your teacher.
• Mention your hypothesis and explain it briefly by providing relevant background information. You can also explain the theory of experiment in a concise manner as if it is the part of hypothesis.
• Mention appropriate dependent, independent and fixed variables for your experiment.
• State which experimental apparatus will be used by using a list or a labelled diagram. Only draw the measured variables in the diagram without drawing peripheral instruments such as stopwatches and metre sticks.
• Your method should be written in past tense following a numbered list. The method should describe how to control the variables in the experiment. Also, it should be realistic and must describe how to collect the sufficient information.
• Your results should provide with tables showing your measurements along with units. Also, describe uncertainties such as random errors and instruments. Graphs should be neat and clear including the units and axis label. Add slope calculation, standard deviations and averages in a proper format.
• Last but not the least; mention your findings by evaluating the outcomes in an objective manner. If the outcomes are not close as expected, then give reasons why the derived results are not consistent with the expected one. Also, further suggest the improvements.
